01Work out what the car really costs you
Add up the EMI, insurance, servicing, parking and the depreciation you lose each year. Then look at how many days the vehicle actually moves. That gap between cost and use is what renting can help close. Being honest about it also helps you set a sensible price.
02Check the legal requirements first
In India, vehicles rented out for self-drive are generally expected to be registered for that purpose, which usually means commercial registration (a black number plate with yellow letters) and a permit under the state's rent-a-cab or rent-a-motorcycle rules. A privately registered white-plate vehicle rented to strangers can create problems with the transport department and with your insurance. Check the rules in your state with the RTO before you list, and only list a vehicle that meets them.
03Make sure your insurance covers renting
A standard private-car policy may not cover a vehicle while it's rented out. Talk to your insurer about cover for self-drive rental use, and keep the policy current. RaideX will ask for your insurance details when you list, and a lapsed policy means the listing is paused.
04Price for your area, not for a guess
Look at what similar vehicles charge nearby, factor in wear and your time for handovers, and consider the payout shown for each booking. Eligible bookings can pay hosts up to 90% of the rental fare; your exact payout is shown before you accept. Nobody can promise a monthly figure; it depends on your vehicle, your location and how often you make it available.
05Plan the handover like a professional
Keep the vehicle clean, fuelled or charged, and serviced. At every pickup and return, record the condition, fuel level and odometer reading in the app with the rider. Those records are what protect you if there is ever a question about damage or distance.
06Decide how available you want to be
You stay in control of your calendar. Block the days the family needs the car and open the rest. Cancelling a confirmed booking lets a rider down, so set availability you can honour.
